Intel unveiled their 5th generation Intel Core processor family. The 5th generation, or Broadwell-U family, utilizes Intel’s 14nm manufacturing process.
The new process, combined with architectural enhancements, enables the 5th Generation Intel Core processors to deliver up to 24 percent better graphics performance, up to 50 percent faster video conversion and battery life that is up to 1.5 hours longer.
The size reduction allows Intel to fit 35 percent more transistors on a 37 percent smaller die, providing improvements for notebooks, ultrabooks, all-in-one desktop PCs and mini PCs. Intel has also set their sights on becoming the go-to solution for the “Internet of Things”. The 5th gen Core processors include 14 new processors with 10 new 15W processors with Intel HD graphics and 10 new 28W processors with Intel Iris graphics. The different CPUs will continue to be offered in Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 formats with vPro optional. Intel Pentium and Celeron processors utilizing the 14nm process are also now available. Systems utilizing the 5th gen Core processors are expected to be available in January.
In addition, Intel also started shipping 14nm processors for tablets, codenamed “Cherry Trail”. Devices based on the platform are expected to be announced in the first half of 2015.
