AmpliFi will bring mesh wifi to your existing router

2017-01-03 by Jason

AmpliFi, the consumer-side of Ubiquiti, will announce at CES 2017 that the “meshpoints” part of their AmpliFi system will be available separately AND that they can be used with your existing wireless router to add the benefits of mesh wifi to your home network. By working with your existing WiFi, this can actually solve the criticisms I have seen that the router is not full-featured enough for advanced use cases while fine for your average home user.

The MeshPoints plug into an outlet, connect to your wifi, and then improve the wireless internet coverage of your home. The MeshPoints are the same as those bundled with the AmpliFi Home Wi-Fi system. They have a magnetic connector that allows the antenna to be angled in a position that gives it the strongest signal. The MeshPoint is discussed in detail in this recent post on the AmpliFi blog.

To add the MeshPoint to your network, you just plug it in within range of your current wifi and configure it with the AmpliFi app with a Bluetooth connection. I expected that the company would start selling the MeshPoints separately after they sold the AmpliFi Home base by itself.

Pricing and availability is expected with the official announcement at CES 2017. There may be more announcements than just this as well.
