Book Review: CompTIA Strata Green IT

2010-05-07 by Jason

CompTIA just recently announced their CompTIA Strata Green IT certification and as this has been what my job involves lately, I decided to jump on in and see if I could get the certification as soon as possible. The exam certifies that you as an IT Professional have…

  • A specialized knowledge of current IT methodologies
  • The ability to develop, deploy, and calculate true ROI for green IT initiatives
  • Knowledge of cost-cutting power management and IT virtualization techniques
  • Proven understanding of environmentally-sound waste disposal
  • An awareness of global organizations mandating standards and regulations

While meeting the suggested prerequisites of the exam by having the A+ certification and over 18 months of experience, I still wanted to do a little studying before I took the exam. To do that, I used the only book I could find on Amazon that has been published for this exam, Exam Preparation Course in a Book for Passing the CompTIA Strata Green IT by William Manning.

I can’t be too critical of the book because it was the only option to truly study from start to finish specifically on the topics the CompTIA Strata Green IT exam covers. Despite that fact, there were a noticeable number of typos but I am pretty attentive to those sorts of things.

Overall, the book was a good read. It weighs in at only 148 pages and allows you to quickly read through the topics and cover the gamut of Green IT. The book covers in detail these topics:

  • The Basics of Green IT
  • Green IT Technologies
  • Green IT Techniques
  • Green Buildings
  • Green IT Policies and Standards

It also includes a glossary of acronyms used in the book and a practice exam. The practice exam consists of 40 questions and has the answers with justification in the following section. The practice exam was helpful in finding out what areas I might need to review before taking the exam.

Currently you can purchase a voucher for the CompTIA Strata Green IT exam and it will save you $10 off of the normally $99 exam cost directly from CompTIA: http://store.comptia.org/p/greenitexp.aspx

Apparently the book was sufficient as I was able to pass the exam quite confidently. I would recommend both Exam Preparation Course in a Book for Passing the CompTIA Strata Green IT by William Manning and the CompTIA Strata Green IT exam.
