The Federal Aviation Administration is now requiring the registration of all Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS, or commonly known as drones) weighing more than 0.55 lbs. While drones are employed with military applications, civil uses are increasing for hobby and commercial purposes. The FAA registration is the first response to this increase in airspace activity.
You may register online at http://www.faa.gov/uas/registration/ if your UAS weighs less than 55 pounds and is used for only hobby and recreation within the United States. All other cases must register the drone by paper. Registration costs $5 (it’s free after rebate for the first 30 days) and owners must be older than 13 years and US citizens or legal permanent residents. The process is easy and does not require working with a third party “drone registration” company.

In addition to registration, the FAA also has these rules for unmanned aircraft:
• Fly below 400 feet altitude.
• Keep your unmanned aircraft in sight at all times.
• Never fly near manned aircraft, especially near airports.
• Never fly over groups of people, stadiums or sporting events.
• Never fly near emergency response efforts.
