Adobe Reader X Now Available For Download and Tips on Deploying

2010-11-18 by Jason

Despite Adobe’s confusing claims earlier this week that Adobe Reader X (pronounced ’10’) and Acrobat X being available, the software just now became available for download. They just barely made their “within 30 days” promise from October 18th.

You can download this latest version of Adobe Reader from the usual http://get.adobe.com/reader/ site. Unfortunately, the Download Manager (Adobe DLM) is back (along with the McAfee Security Scan). You can also download the latest version of Reader from the Adobe FTP site without hassle here: ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/10.x/10.0.0/en_US/AdbeRdr1000_en_US.exe

You can also find the .msi file in that same directory, or directly here:

ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/10.x/10.0.0/en_US/AdbeRdr1000_en_US.msi

The updated font packs for Reader can be found here on their FTP server again:
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/10.x/10.0.0/misc/

The Adobe Reader 10 .msi will be useful for those organizations deploying the software through Group Policy. I’ll be looking into that further tomorrow and post any gotchas that I encounter. The ability to deploy it, however, will largely depend on the updated Adobe Customization Wizard X, which I haven’t seen available yet.

In the meanwhile, the Adobe blog – IT Matters, there is an article with 5 Things to Think About Before Deploying Adobe Reader or Acrobat X that should be read before attempting deployment. In that same article, the author promises to also announce when the updated customization wizard is available, so it might be worthwhile to subscribe to that blog in your RSS feed or just check back here at 404 Tech Support, I’m sure I’ll be mentioning it. You might also be interested in reading the updated Enterprise Administration Guide for Acrobat Family of Products.

Enjoy the new version and here’s to hoping the security improvements pay off, along with the other features like Microsoft SharePoint integration.
