Part of a series where I’ll be investigating different infrastructures to support a small, but rapidly growing Knowledge Base, Dokuwiki has certainly been a breeze to setup and configure.
Featuring a “typical” wiki front-end and simplistic “no-need” back-end, Dokuwiki is a pretty complete package. It lets you do almost everything that you would want to do with your wiki with ease.
While it does allow you to manage permissions based on individual users or groups with graded permissions to ‘none,’ ‘read,’ ‘edit,’ ‘create,’ and ‘delete,’ I can’t help but feel that the means of doing this could be easier. It allows for permissions management through an Access Control List, but with a certain degree of complexity. I worry about how well this will scale when it grows from the public and 1 editor to a couple dozen editors with different grades of access to specific pages, an internal only section, and public access.
Dokuwiki was really easy to get working right out of the box, simply extract it to your htdocs folder. I think it does the wiki function perfectly, but I guess a wiki just isn’t what I’m looking for as the infrastructure to a Knowledge Base.
