MPAA’s Respect Copyrights Site – For After You Receive That Infringement Notice

2011-05-28 by Jason

If you’ve received an infringement notice from your ISP for movies, you might be told to visit the website www.RespectCopyrights.com. It’s an interesting little site with 4 sub-pages that inform you about digital piracy, how to mend your ways, and how to move on. The site assumes you’re an offender when you visit the site but it provides some basic information about piracy and legitimate alternative sources to find legal movies and TV.

The FAQ page covers the how and why an infringement notice might have been sent. Sometimes the content is overly simplistic and other times it seems to be overly technical while skipping the basics to be truly useful. They also have tips on how to know what is legal or illegal on Avoiding Piracy. There is also information about rules that universities have to follow if they receive federal student financial aid. There are also details about increasingly available digital copies of movies and TV shows.

If you’ve found your way to this Web site, it is likely because your Internet service provider or—if you’re a student—the college or university you attend, has notified you that your Internet account has been used to illegally copy and/or distribute copyrighted movies or television shows. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) is dedicated to fostering a safe, legal online environment where consumers have many choices for viewing the movies and TV shows they love, while addressing the growing problem of illegal content on the Internet. If you received a notice of copyright infringement, you likely have questions about what you should do now and how you can prevent this activity in the future. This site is designed to help answer those questions and to provide information to help you find the content you want legally.

Whether or not you’re an “offender”, there is one page that could be useful to many people: where to legally find shows and movies online. This page lists sites like Hulu, HBO Go, Netflix, various networks’ sites, and other legal sites to find TV shows.

They’re staring at you like they’re just wondering You wouldn’t download a car, would you? and you’re all like Heck yeah, I would if I could.

No, I didn’t find out about this page because I received an infringement notice.
