Google Cooks Up A New Recipe-Friendly Search View

2011-02-24 by Jason

Google announced on the Official Google Blog today that it is rolling out a new search view that specializes in recipe searching. You can search for dishes or inspiration by ingredients. Google has interesting details on the new search on the Google Recipe Search landing page.

Recipe View is based on data from rich snippets markup, which we first introduced at Searchology in 2009. If you’re a recipe publisher, you can add markup to your webpages so that your content can appear with this improved presentation in regular Google results as well as in Recipe View. Recipe View is part of our ongoing efforts to enrich the search experience using structured data, and this release is an exciting technical milestone for our team since it’s first time we’ve built a brand new set of search tools based off of rich snippets data.

If you run a website that posts recipes, you can ensure that your recipes are marked up correctly by viewing this Google Webmaster Central Help Article.

You can filter recipe search results by cooktime, calories, or ingredients to include or exclude. Other benefits include:

Focus Your Search
When you search for a recipe or ingredient on Google, you’ll get lots of results, but not all of them will be for recipes. Now you can narrow your search results to show only recipes.

Recipe Info At Your Fingertips
Get help finding the right recipe with ratings, ingredients, and pictures displayed on the results page.

Slice and Dice Your Results
With just a few clicks, you can customize and filter search results to show recipes with your ideal ingredients, cook time and calorie count.

I’m not seeing the Recipe View option yet but it’s rolling out now. You can check it out right now from the Google Recipe Search Landing page.

Recipe View is rolling out now in the U.S. and Japan, and we’ll be adding more countries in the future. We look forward to making further improvements and building more views so you can “slice and dice” your results for other types of searches as well. Bon appetit!
