Splashup – Another In-Browser Image Editor

2010-05-13 by Jason

That silly, crazy-capable web has done it again. Here’s Splashup, a Flash-powered, in-browser image editor. (Enough hyphens for you?) It has some great features that allow it to easily surpass the desktop application MS Paint you have installed on your computer.

I’ve previously talked about SUMO Paint, a similar in-browser image editor, and Splashup is comparable to that. Having options is never a bad thing, right? I still personally prefer Paint.NET for all my image editing needs, Splashup has the benefit that I can use it anywhere I can get online with a Flash-enabled browser and requires no installation.

Splashup has pretty much all the features you’d need for casual image editing and then some like support for layers, cropping, and filters. Although I felt SUMO Paint had more tools for shapes, patterns, and different effects, Splashup is still quite sufficient and allowed me to draw up this little self-portrait with the mouse quickly.

Splashup allows you to save as .jpg, .fxo, .png file formats. You can save to your Splashup account or to your computer. You can also open images from your desktop, your Splashup account, Facebook, flickr, Picasa, SmugMug, photobucket, or a URL. You can also snap an image from your webcam to work with.

Splashup doesn’t have any costs associated with it. You can use it for free without having to sign up for an account or you can sign up for the ability to save to your account. You can read more about the features with the Splashup tour.

While the web version of Splashup is what I’ve highlighted here, they also offer a downloadable, limited version of the software called Splashup Light.
