Ideas That Will Free up MacBook Hard Drive

Freeing up a MacBook drive can be quite tricky for some people. There is not that much storage in the first place, and trying to fit as much data as possible happens quite often. Moreover, solid-state drivers are replacing hard drives for the sake of performance, but the available storage on SSDs is even smaller.

So what are your options if you want to have more than just a few gigabytes of free drive space? Here are some ideas that should be of great use to every Macbook user who is struggling with their hard drives.

Idea #1 – Clear Cache

If you want a place to start, why not start with cache cleaning? Caches and other temporary junk, like app extensions, plugins, or temporary system update files, accumulate quickly if you are using the Macbook a lot.

There are two ways to get rid of the temporary data. The first is to get a cleanup utility tool and let it run to clear the system automatically. It costs money, but the investment is worth it because you need to remove temporary junk often.

The second method is to delete files manually. You will need to enable visibility for temporary data by changing system settings first. Moreover, it is recommended to create backups because you can delete something important accidentally.

Think about which of the two methods is the best for you and go with it. The most important thing is to remember that you need to get rid of unnecessary junk files regularly.

Idea #2 – Remove Old Applications

Old applications are similar to temporary junk. If they are of no use, there is no real reason to keep them on the computer most of the time.

Look at your application list and see which of those you can delete. Even when apps do not require that much space, it is recommended to delete them because they will free up system resources. Also, in case you need to use an application some time in the future, there is an option to download and reinstall it.

Idea #3 – Delete Language Pack Files

Language pack files are more or less redundant. Most Macbook users need only the English version and another language that they are fluent in. But what about the other 50 languages that you do not know? The files are large, and they can take up to 1 gigabyte of space. If you are looking to free up hard drive space, then see which of your applications have foreign language support and delete any files that you find unnecessary.

Idea #4 – Get Rid of Old Downloads

You might have forgotten about old downloads. See the download folder. If you find any files that have no use, do not hesitate and delete them. You may also want to change the default location for downloads to your desktop so that you can notice redundant download files quicker.

Idea #5 – Check Email Attachment Folder

Email attachments are not that different from downloads. If you use email for communications and work a lot, you are bound to open many attachments. These attachments are saved on the computer by default. You might have hoarded a lot of data without realizing it. Check the mail folder regularly, or change the settings so that email attachments are no longer saved on the computer.

Idea #6 – Scan Computer for Potential Malware

A virus could be eating your hard drive space. Scan the system with antivirus and eliminate any infected threats. You might be having more problems with cybersecurity threats than just the lack of available space on a hard drive. If so, change your habits. In addition to getting a more reliable antivirus, avoid clicking on shady links. Consider getting a virtual private network as well.

Idea #7 – Transfer Data to Clouds and External Storage Devices

Not every file has to be removed. You can transfer some data to external storage devices like memory sticks or clouds. Cloud services, such as Dropbox and iCloud, are a solid option because they are free with an option to expand available storage with a monthly subscription. Not to mention that your files can be accessed from different devices, not just the computer, and the data is in a really safe location.

Idea #8 – Empty the Trash Bin

Remember to empty the Trash Bin. Putting files in the Bin without emptying it is the same as relocating the files. Make sure that you empty the Trash Bin so that the data is removed from your computer for good.

Idea #9 – Reinstall the Operating System

If you are still experiencing issues despite trying every idea, reinstalling the OS is an option you have left. Reinstalling the operating system is like giving your computer a fresh start, including the hard drive. Keep in mind, though, that you should back up files you want to keep because the computer data is wiped after you reinstall the OS.
