VMware Remote Console on Windows 10 gives ‘Failed to install the hcmon driver’

Trying to install the VMware Remote Console software on a new Windows 10 computer consistently resulted in the error message ‘Failed to install the hcmon driver.’

After several attempts with minor troubleshooting changes (fresh reboot, background processes killed), I still could not install the software. Searching for the error message, resulted in a knowledge base article from VMware that recommended uninstalling vSphere client instances before installing the VMRC. I did not have the vSphere client installed and I received the message on multiple computers.

Finally, I attempted another workaround – elevating command prompt. I copied the .msi installer locally and ran command prompt as administrator. I then navigated the CMD window to my installer.

CD c:\users\admin\desktop

msiexec /i VMware-VMRC-8.0.1-3747990.msi

With that command, the installation wizard again launched and it was able to proceed through to completion without receiving the hcmon driver error.
