2D animation software behind Futurama and Studio Ghibli open-sourced and freely available

The software behind 2D animated projects like Futurama and Studio Ghibli’s amazing works has been open-sourced and released free of charge. The software is called OpenToonz and is based on the “Toonz” software that was used professionally by these big studios. The license allows for the software to be used free of charge even for commercial productions.

OpenToonz includes the animation-specialized scanning tool “GTS” and Dwango’s SDK for managing plug-in effects. GTS is available for Windows only while the others support OS X 10.9 or newer. TWAIN-compatible scanners are supported with the Epson DS-50000 specifically recommended.

You can find all of this available at the OpenToonz website: opentoonz.github.io
