What is augmented reality?

Augmented Reality layers virtual objects into real life settings. It is becoming more popular with smartphones since they have cameras, displays, and computers, everything needed for augmented reality. An app would use the rear-facing camera to see what the person is seeing. The computer would generate the digital objects such as special effects or information about the real-life objects. The display would then combine the camera’s video feed with the generated digital objects to present an “augmented reality”.

Google Cardboard or the recently announced new ViewMaster from Mattel presentaugmented reality, as do several games and apps for smartphones. This infographic presents AR from a marketing perspective with more examples.
