Malwarebytes Anti-Malware update prompts for Administrator

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware recently released version 2.00.2.1012. When MBAM prompted that it need to install a program update, I told it to install the update but received an error message in return.

“Please login as an administrator to install the new version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.”

I was logged in as a local administrator and Malwarebytes was running from its automatic startup. Apparently, without being elevated, it wasn’t able to install the new program update. I saw a few others post about this error on the Malwarebytes Support forum. There are a few solutions available such as altering the UAC (User Account Controls), which I don’t recommend or think should be necessary, or downloading and installing the latest version from the Malwarebytes website.

My approach was a bit more convenient for me. I close Malwarebytes by right-clicking the system tray icon and choosing ‘Exit’. I then found where Malwarebytes had already downloaded the updated installer and ran the setup from there. On Windows 8.1, I found the installer here:

“C:ProgramDataMalwarebytesMalwarebytes Anti-Malwarembam-setup.exe”

That location should be similar for Windows 7 and newer computers. Hopefully this update snag is a problem addressed in a future version of the program but it didn’t seem to be listed in this release’s changelog.
