Symform accepts a different form of currency to purchase cloud backup storage

Yesterday was World Backup Day. Every March 31st has been declared to be World Backup Day and serve as a reminder to everybody to backup their data. The website behind the holiday offers winnable prizes, discount offers, tips on how to backup and more.

If you have every intention of backing up your data but find yourself falling short when it comes to paying the monthly or annual costs for cloud storage, you might be interested to learn about Symform. In their words, they’re the only globally distributed, crowdsourced storage cloud solution in existence.

With their reliance on others to provide the storage, they allow you to pay for storage beyond the first free 10 GB that they allow. You can either pay money for each additional GB beyond 10GB or you can contribute 2GB of your own storage. You can also pay in storage for higher quality support plans. There is no limit to how much storage you can purchase and you can mix between contributing storage and paying cash to accommodate your needs.

Symform works with Netgear ReadyNAS, QNAP, and Synology network attached storage to allow customers to backup and allocate storage from their NAS to the cloud.

I think Symform sounds great. Of course, you have all the concerns as with any cloud storage provider (security, availability, reliability) but I like the flexibility to pay with additional storage. My biggest concern if I were to set this up as a residential user would be my bandwidth usage. Unfortunately, bandwidth caps are a reality with most ISPs. If I contribute 10GB of storage, how much extra bandwidth per month will Symform consume backing up other people’s data? Of course, I would have my own uploads counting against that limit as well. I may just have to set it up and try it for a little while on my NAS to see if it works out for me. Another place to backup data is always welcome in this world.
