Libraries take the lead on bridging the digital divide with DigitalLearn.org

The Public Library Association and the Institute of Museum and Library Services have launched the beta of DigitalLearn.org. It is a website to provide some basic training into using technology. The site is a hub for those wanting to learn and those willing to help learners.

Under the Learn section, the site currently has guides on ‘Intro to Email’, ‘Using a Windows 7 PC’, and ‘Basic web search’. Further lessons on “Getting started on the computer”, “Introduction to the Internet”, and “Using a Mac (OS X)” are listed as coming soon.

Each class is comprised of video lessons that are just a few minutes long and explain the concepts and give examples. The videos sometimes utilize screenshots to make the examples clear. There are also often PDF handouts to go along with the class.

If you know somebody that is just starting out with technology, this website could be a great resource to share with them. It could give them a good baseline for the basic knowledge to get them started at their own pace and far less frustrating for a seasoned veteran like yourself to cover. If you do have the patience and resources to teach a lesson, you can convey your interest under the ‘Help Learners’ section.
