“But It’s not Patch Tuesday” brings Firefox 19, Java 6u41/7u15

Patch Tuesday (second Tuesday of the month) was last week but today brought a few application updates with it. Java versions 6 and 7 updates were on the schedule with a lot of press after their February 1st rush patch and later announcement that the previously schedule February 19th update was still coming. Firefox, and its every 6 weeks release schedule, is just a little too frequent to keep track of.

Firefox 19 includes the usual bevy of bug fixes. The big change with this version is the new built-in PDF reader. It’s a feature that Chrome has had for a while and gives Firefox some more flexibility to improve the browser experience over using the Adobe Reader or other PDF reader plugin.

You can see the full release notes for Firefox 19.0 for the rest of the details.

While Firefox is pretty run of the mill, this Java update has a few oddities worth noting. Java 6 has received its last update, bringing it up to version 6u41. It will be available for download from Oracle only through April of this year. The 6u41 release notes also describe the bug fixes that managed to make it in the final version.

Java 7 updated to version 7u15 is available from Oracle and is the preferred client version. You can check its release notes for the full changes.

Java 7u15 kicks off Oracle’s plan to auto-update all Java 6 users to version 7. We discussed with the last release some steps to take to prevent this from affecting your users.

Adobe
In addition to the updates, Adobe has an update for Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat scheduled this week to address an in the wild exploit.
