Search for photos by color with TinEye’s Multicolr

TinEye makes some pretty cool products surrounding image search on the web. I previously wrote about them as a tool to find the original source of an image. A new tool from TinEye’s labs is called Multicolor Search. It allows you to find Creative Commons licensed images from Flickr based on color composition.

With Multicolor Search, you choose a color and TinEye will return thousands of images thousands of images that are primarily made up of that color.

You can choose up to 5 colors to search for. Each color you add is evenly divided – say 4 colors each at 25%. You can further define each color in the bottom right color. Hover over it and you’ll be presented with a trash can to get rid of the color and a color wheel. Clicking the color wheel allows you to define the color by hexadecimal number. You can also drag the line between colors to reduce the composition.

By default, two colors are searched in the images for close to 50% composition each. However, sliding the split bar, you can change the search to anything like a 20/80 split and the return images will reflect the changed composition.

TinEye’s Multicolor Search Lab is pretty cool. Test it out and see all the colorful images.
