World IPv6 Day 2: This Time It Stays On For Good

Though it sounds like a bad movie sequel, World IPv6 Day is back and it’s a good thing. Whereas last year’s World IPv6 Day was a 24 hour test by some of the largest websites on the Internet, this time IPv6 is being turned on and left on since no major problems were encountered during the test. While World IPv6 Launch is scheduled for June 6th, due to the international time clock, that means websites will enable IPv6 support in less than 12 hours from publishing time.

As part of the event, Google has their Chief Internet Evangelist, Vint Cerf, also a founding father of the Internet, discussing IPv6 in this video.

IPv6 is the successor to IPv4, which ran out of addresses to provide to all of our networked devices. You can learn more about IPv6 basics from one of our previous posts. Also, you might find a hexadecimal numpad both humorous and convenient to aid in the switch to IPv6.
