Add Office 97 Clippy to your website with Clippy.js

Remember the annoying Microsoft Agents? Things like Clippy in Office 97 and Rover on Windows XP Search? The developers at Smore decided to resurrect these characters and give them new life on the web.

Clippy.js is a Javascript library that you can implement on any website. It allows you to embed the characters in a movable, animated fashion.

  • Play agent animations
  • “Speak” to the user
  • Move the agent around
  • Use multiple agents at the same time
The webpage on Clippy.JS is delightfully framed in the classic Microsoft Word theme. It includes all the information needed to include Clippy or one of the other assistants on your webpage.

To embed Clippy on your site, you download the files from github and upload them to your server. Call the clippy.css file from the header and add the javascript calls to the bottom of the page. You can then customize the animations you would like the Microsoft Agent to take.

For a demo of the Microsoft Agents and an interactive version, see the Clippy.JS page, select your assistant, and press the red buttons to activate the various animations.

You can still get Microsoft Agent-enabled programs to work in Windows 7 through this KB article and an open-source program called Double Agent.
