Avast! is my preferred and recommended free antivirus. It does a great job while not consuming a whole lot of resources. Building upon the excellence that Avast! has been comes version 7 today. It brings with it a number of updates that improve the security and functionality an incredible amount for free security software.
Some of the new updates include streaming updates through Avast’s “cloud”, the FileRep feature for identifying new files and old files quickly, Remote Assistance to control allow a friend to control your PC to fix a problem, and seeing the status of all of your computers under an avast! account.

If you are currently running Avast! 6, you should be able to update the program (if it hasn’t already prompted you) and get version 7 automatically after a reboot of the computer.
