Is Apple Downplaying Today’s ‘Let’s Talk iPhone’ Event?

Much to the disappointment of many everywhere, it seems Apple is not providing a live video feed of today’s announcement. Rumors are starting to swirl around about rumors at this point but they should be stemmed in a few hours.

Could Apple be downplaying the event because the iPhone 5 is going to launch as a Sprint exclusive, as the WSJ reports? Is it because iCloud is the real star of the show and too much hype has been built up around iPhone 5 hardware? The iCloud still says Coming this Fall on its webpage, so launching following today’s event could make sense and would coincide with press being accidentally sent this URL (to a non-existent page yet) to the iCloud setup page. Perhaps this is just new CEO Tim Cook’s way of doing things?

Even though we won’t be able to watch the event live, there are other ways to get the news:

VertexTV (maybe just audio)

Apple’s annual fall media event is just around the corner, and Vertex will broadcast live coverage. Follow Tim Cook’s first public appearance as Apple CEO, where he is expected to introduce the iPhone 5 and perhaps a lower-cost iPhone 4 variant. Plus, will Sprint be added to the stable of carriers supporting iPhone?

Our coverage begins today at 12:30 PM EDT/9:30 AM PDT with a preview show discussing the latest expectations. Live keynote coverage begins at 1:00 PM EDT/10:00 AM PDT, and will go through the entirety of the event. We will have a 30 minute post-show after the conclusion of Apple’s presentation, followed by an introduction to Vertex and the launch of our regularly scheduled programming, which will last through 11 PM EDT/8 PM PDT (see our schedule for program listings). For all the latest details, follow us on Twitter.

Note: We will attempt to patch into the keynote room live, and hope to have a live feed to broadcast. Perhaps video, but more likely audio-only; if we are unsuccessful, we will provide live remote coverage.

Thanks for checking Vertex first for your Apple coverage, and we’ll see you on the 4th!

Apple Press Releases

If Sprint’s exclusivity is a big factor in the iPhone 5 roll-out, it seems like the bigger event might be this Friday where Sprint will be holding a “Strategy Update” to discuss upcoming changes.
