Snag.gy – An HTML5-Powered Website Where You Can Paste Screenshots

As you can tell by many posts on 404 Tech Support, I heavily utilize the ability to take screenshots. Unfortunately, it’s a less than efficient process. You press Print Screen (or Alt+Print Screen for just the active window), open your photo editor, paste in the screenshot, crop to what you want, and finally, save the image. If you want to share the image, it would be another few steps to upload it and share the URL to the image.

Smoothing out this process, we have an HTML5-powered website called Snag.gy that works with recent versions of Firefox and Chrome. It allows you to paste the screenshot directly into your browser.

After it finishes uploading your image, it will give you a URL you can use to share the image with the world.

It also includes a simple editor that can allow you to crop, draw with a pencil or rectangle, and add text. You can then save the image and share the new version.

I was noticing some issues with some certain screenshots, like one of Notepad where the main part of the window wasn’t shown, and others where the colors were shifted (as you can see a little bit of above with the address bar and scroll bars getting blacked out). The site is still young so hopefully those quirks will get fixed.

Other than those slight hiccups, Snag.gy is a pretty convenient tool and it might help when explain screenshots to others. It’s worth checking out.
