Google Notices Malware and Warns Users

Google shared today that it has noticed some unusual traffic coming across its sites when computers infected with a specific malware visit them online. Google is then using that information to notify users that their computers are likely compromised with an alert at the top of their pages.

This particular malware causes infected computers to send traffic to Google through a small number of intermediary servers called “proxies.” We hope that by taking steps to notify users whose traffic is coming through these proxies, we can help them update their antivirus software and remove the infections.

If you click on the Learn how to fix this link, you are taken to a Google Help page that lists how you can get an antivirus product and clean the infection from the Windows HOSTS file.

It’s great to see Google turning the tides on malware. A lot of malware will use Google through Blackhat SEO in order to get their malicious pages visited for popular topics. Now Google’s popularity should help people find out their infected and take steps to clean up their computers.
