Today’s Google Doodle Uses Roman Numerals To Send Off 2010 – GMMXIE

Linking to a search of “New Year’s Eve”, today’s Google doodle holds the cryptic text GMMXlE.

Like a double rainbow, you might be left asking yourself: What does it mean? If we remove the normal Google logo from it and only look at the numbers in yellow, we get MMXI.

Recognizing these letters as common Roman Numerals, we can add it up to get the number 2011.

M = 1000

X = 10

I = 1

1000 + 1000 + 10 + 1 = 2011

M + M + X + I = 2011

While MMX would equal 2010, MMXI equals 2011. Tonight we bid goodbye to MMX and hello to a year of MMXI.
