Netflix Site Down or Slow Throughout The Day [Updated]

Netflix has (apparently) entered a scheduled maintenance window and as a result the site is down until 11:45 PM Pacific Time tonight. This seemingly comes with bad timing as Netflix has been getting a decent amount of positive press lately. Sony PlayStation3 and Nintendo Wii Netflix streaming apps were improved on Monday. In addition, earlier this week Netflix CEO Reed Hastings discussed offering a streaming-only plan to U.S. customers, which I spied last night on their homepage.

However, as of publishing you’ll see this when you visit the Netflix Homepage:

This message has since been updated to remove the scheduled maintenance part, the estimated time the site will be back up, and to change the phone number.

So perhaps it isn’t down for the rest of the day.

My guess for what happened: 1 of 2 things.

They freaked out about the leaked info I and others saw last night and yanked it down a little too hard.
or
They’re working on implementing the new pricing scheme and something went haywire with the site update.

Time will tell. Your theories?

Update: Netflix didn’t go into any great depth explaining why the site was down but they are offering a 3% credit to those customers that tried to stream a show or movie from the site. I received an e-mail last night explaining how to apply for the credit. Assumedly, you too should be able to find it in your inbox.
