Where to Ask Your Tech Questions?

I hope you know that you can always visit 404 Tech Support and ask your technical questions in our forum. However, there may be an even better spot for your question where you can get an answer from a whole community of professionals and if you’re a professional, maybe you should spend some web time hanging out in these communities to help other people learn and pick up a few tips yourself. There are four sites that I know of that specialize in answering questions about Programming, General computer Software or hardware troubleshooting, Networking, Servers, or System Administration, and Web design and HTML/CSS layout. If you know of others, please share in the comments.

Stack Overflow is your community for questions related to computer programming.

What kind of questions can I ask here?

Programming questions, of course! As long as your question is:

  • detailed and specific
  • written clearly and simply
  • of interest to other programmers

… it is welcome here.

Server Fault is the community where you can ask questions related to networking, servers, or system administration.

What kind of questions can I ask here?

Server Fault is for system administrators and IT professionals, people who manage or maintain computers in a professional capacity. If you are in charge of …

  • servers
  • networks
  • many desktop PCs (other than your own)

… then you’re in the right place to ask your question! Well, as long as the question is about your servers, your networks, or desktops you support, anyway.

Please note that Server Fault is not for general computer troubleshooting questions; if you paid for that desktop hardware, and it’s your personal workstation, it is unlikely that your question is appropriate for Server Fault.

Super User is the place for your general computer software or hardware troubleshooting inquiries.

What kind of questions can I ask here?

Super User is for computer enthusiasts and power users. If you have a question about …

  • computer hardware
  • computer software

and it is not about

  • videogames or consoles
  • websites or web services like Facebook, Twitter, and WordPress
  • electronic devices, media players, cell phones or smart phones, except insofar as they interface with your computer

then you’re in the right place to ask your question!

DocType is a resource for web design and html/css layout.

Doctype is a free question and answer site for web designers. You can get fast solutions to your CSS, HTML, web design and email design problems.

For each question, Doctype can generate screenshots of your design on any browser or email client. This makes it much easier for other people to see the problem and help you fix it.
