Windows 7 Is Coming!

Windows 7 is set to be released October 22nd.

Be prepared by running the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. This 6.3 MB download can install on your computer and check devices and programs for potential problems with upgrading to Windows 7 if you didn’t install the Beta/Release Client to test for yourself. After running it on my Windows Server 2008 box, it looks like I’ll need to update the drivers for my NIC and my Canon LiDE scanner. Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 (weird) and Stardock Impulse are the only two programs flagged as having potential problems.

Along with devices and programs, the Upgrade Advisor checks four minimum requirements as well: CPU speed (must be 1 GHz minimum), RAM (must have at least 1 GB for 32-bit Windows 7 and 2 GB for 64-bit Windows 7), Hard drive free space (must be 16-20 GB free for 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7 respectively), and capable of running Windows Aero.

You can also learn about the Windows XP virtual mode to find out if any XP programs will give you problems after the upgrade.

You can potentially get Windows 7 free by throwing a party for the launch. Get more info from House Party on this Microsoft sponsored event.
