Frog Rights – For Non-Admins burning CDs/DVDs

If you’ve installed Nero before and support users that are not Administrators for their machines, you’ve probably stumbled across Nero BurnRights. BurnRights allows you to define permissions as to who is allowed to burn CDs or not, from ‘Everybody’ to ‘groups only’ to ‘Administrators only.’ This utility works for Nero 5 & 6 and is required as ‘Administrators only’ is the default setting. Before correcting this, as a non-admin, you might see error messages like: “Access Violation,” “ASPI Initialization failed,” or “No compatible cdr drives found.”

In the case that you’re looking to escape Nero’s increasingly-bloated grasp, you’ll need to find something to replace the BurnRights tool. You might find that in Frog Rights. This small executable allows you to set the permissions between ‘Everybody’ and ‘Administrators only,’ so slightly less gradient than Nero BurnRights, but I never found myself using the ‘Groups’ anyways. Simply run Frog Right as the local admin and change the simple radio-button interface to allow ‘Everybody’ access to burn.

After running and setting the permissions to ‘Everybody’ through Frog Rights, I was suddenly allowed (as a non-admin test user) to run different free applications to burn CDs like BurnAware, DeepBurner, and CDBurnerXP, opening up freedom from Nero or Roxio and other limited license programs.
