Windows Update

If Microsoft needs some projects to keep busy with it’s Windows Update, I’ve got a recommendation. Instead of devoting the time with the legitimacy checker that actually reports back to Microsoft (daily communication), how about making an update that just lets me turn off the ‘Remind Me Later’ after Windows updates have been installed. It has to pop up at least every 15 minutes. It’s popped up a few times while I’ve been writing this, and let me tell you, it has to be one of the most annoying things.

Along the lines of Windows Updates, I was burning a DVD last night. I started it right before I went to bed. I woke up this morning and went to check on the status. What I came to was a freshly restarted computer. I chose my username (Windows XP Home) but none of my programs were open, no DVD burning software, nothing, not even the webpage I had left open. Wait, let me move the mouse around and what happens. A little green shield pops up in the system tray, “You computer was recently updated, which required an automatic restart of your machine.” Now I have the settings for Windows update to NOT automatically download updates and NOT automatically install updates. Besides the fact that it violated those two rules that are the few I get to tell it, even if it does turn an “unhappy” yellow in the Windows Security Center, it restarted the computer without my permission and without care of what programs I had open. Fortunately the DVD had finished burning, but it just makes you wonder… what next?

Well, I could go on for more rants against Windows Update, but, oh wait… I have to restart my computer, it “has not been restarted since [I] last installed updates.”
