Firefox 3.6.7 was just released and addresses a number of security and stability issues. You can update to this latest version by going to Help, Check for Updates… or by downloading the latest version from the Firefox site. While security issues are always good, a number of people have visited 404 Tech Support and commented that they were experiencing stability problems with versions 3.6.4 or 3.6.6 that mainly introduced Crash Protection.
Fourteen security advisories were addressed with this release and it’s recommended that you update soon for security reasons. For more details about what came with this update, see the 3.6.7 Release Notes.

This post is brought to you by that person (or persons) who use the stationery in Outlook to gussy up their e-mail messages. I’m sure you all know one or two. So, here’s how they can turn it off and how we can prevent Outlook from showing it to us. Stationery in your e-mail looks something like a hideous 80s wallpaper is on the background of your e-mail, like this:

Some stationery is just annoying and some makes it a lot more difficult to read the message. To be courteous to your e-mail’s recipients, turn it off and don’t force this upon them. Office 2007 and Office 2010 have different ways of getting to the same screen where you can disable the theme.

I was unfortunately given the task a while ago to deploy Skype to select computers within my organization. I say ‘unfortunately’ because I’ve heard many instances involving Skype that make me cringe with my network administrator hat on. Skype has a ‘feature’ that takes advantage of its P2P nature that it calls becoming a supernode. A supernode is just a computer that has Skype installed on it that has excess bandwidth. Skype then starts routing local Skype calls through your Internet connection. Sometimes when you have LOTS of excess bandwidth, such as at a University, so much traffic can start getting routed in that it floods the switches and disables an entire building’s network and Internet access. All of this was publicly a big deal a while ago but this article will include steps on deploying Skype with the Supernode disabled and other settings so the software package has minimal effect on your environment.

All weekend, I’ve been tinkering with a new theme here at 404 Tech Support. If you’ve visited over the course of the weekend, you’ve definitely seen it (and I apologize if my tinkering disrupted your visit). I’ve still got a small handful of changes I’d like to make but the majority of the installation is done. I’m enjoying it because it has made my site more responsive and introduced new features. For a reminder of what the old theme looked like, here’s your reminder.

Woopra does for your website the same thing that Google Analytics does, it provides insight to your visitors and audience helping you learn how they ended up on your site and what they’re hoping to get out of it. By using analytics, hopefully you can tune your website to give your visitors what they’re looking for more easily. I’ve tried Google Analytics before but somehow Woopra works for me where as Google Analytics just didn’t tell me anything useful. Between the WordPress.com Stats I was already getting, I didn’t need another static analytics package adding more Javascript to my page. Woopra, on the other hand, processes its information and sends it to your dashboard so you get real-time website analytics. You can see that somebody just visited your site or is visiting your site, how they got there, where they’re from, what page they’re looking at, and all the other usual analytic metrics.

Apple is hosting a press event today to address the issues that are being discussed daily in the media: iPhone 4 dropped calls by holding the phone a particular way. Since we can’t all make it to Cupertino, Macworld is doing an excellent job covering the event with a Macworld Live Blog. Be sure to check that out for the full scoop. Apple has a video and I’ve included some quotes to highlight below.
Apple is providing a video of the conference and shows their testing of antenna problems on other smartphones. You can also take a tour of Apple’s $100 million building for testing antenna design and learn about it and watch a video showcasing it.
