Ask 404TS: How do I find out a Windows 7 Password and other passwords?

ask404tsAn interesting question has come up in the 404 Tech Support forums that I have answered to the best of my abilities. It expands on several topics that I’ve discussed before such as using Kon-Boot to get logged into the machine (or other means), viewing saved passwords in browsers, and circumventing some security measures by using the target hard drive as a secondary hard drive in a second system. Having a legitimate reason, I hope this information is useful to Ajay, who originally asked this question.

Windows 7 Is Coming!

Windows 7 is set to be released October 22nd.

Be prepared by running the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. This 6.3 MB download can install on your computer and check devices and programs for potential problems with upgrading to Windows 7 if you didn’t install the Beta/Release Client to test for yourself. After running it on my Windows Server 2008 box, it looks like I’ll need to update the drivers for my NIC and my Canon LiDE scanner. Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 (weird) and Stardock Impulse are the only two programs flagged as having potential problems.

Windows 7 RC Available

The Windows 7 RC is now publicly available. Go check it out and get a preview of the next Windows operating system. 32-bit and 64-bit options are available again in multiple languages.

It seems the roll-out of this 3.05 GB iso and product keys is going a little smoother than the Windows 7 beta. It looks like Microsoft has outsourced much of that work to Akamai Technologies. A Java downloader is now being used to smooth out the deployment. It handles downloading and an integrity check at the end. It only took me a few minutes to get the full download after signing in with my Live ID.

A Smorgasbord of SysInternals Tools

SysInternals offers a lot of useful tools for Windows computers. These can either add more functionality, work-around different quirks, or gather more information for debugging.

This article is divided into two sections. I tried to separate the utilities into General use and IT use. Those in the General use category might have a larger interested audience and those in the IT category would be of particular interest to those in IT or regular computer maintenance.

Useful for everybody:

Desktops allows you to create up to 3 additional virtual desktops for your computer. This only requires about 5 megabytes of memory for the process and allows you to keep your organizational spaces organized. You could have one desktop where you are browsing, another for working on a document,  and etc. As you can see in the screenshot below, you can configure hotkeys to switch easily between desktops and enable the program as a service so it starts up with your computer.

Unfortunately, Firefox has the same issues as having more than one session with Remote Desktop. You can open Firefox on more than one desktop if you use a different profile on each one otherwise you’ll get a message that the profile is in use.

How to Add Virtual Machines in Server 2008's Hyper-V

If you’re running Windows Server 2008, there’s a cool feature that you might not be taking advantage of yet. Microsoft’s answer to VMware’s success is it’s own hypervisor for virtual machines called Hyper-V. Hyper-V is included in Server 08, but you’ll want to run Windows Update before you install the role as there is a much improved version over the beta version that shipped with the OS.

Like most things with the trimmed down OS, features might be available but they’re not enabled by default. The first thing we’ll need to do is make use of the new terminology that Server 08 uses and we’ll install the role to enable Hyper-V in a short walk-through.

Windows 7 Public Beta Available

The Windows 7 Public Beta is available for download now. Following the Microsoft keynote speech by Steve Ballmer, the Windows 7 Public Beta is available here for preview and testing by the public.

I think Microsoft is doing a good job generating hype and publicity for this release to recover from Vista’s marketing failure. We can also hope that a beta open to the public will generate more feedback and bugs reported so that we get the best final product possible.

It is available in 32-bit and 64-bit, with English, German, Arabic,  Hindi (32-bit only) and Japanese languages.
Select which version you want and download the Windows 7 Public Beta.
