I was asked by a friend the other day about the details on running a website. From the effort required in maintaining a site to hosting and domain costs and what you should look for in a web server. The best way I could figure to answer all of the questions was to go off the only thing I had on the subject, my experiences running the WordPress-driven 404 Tech Support and a phpBB forum. After writing this up and talking about my experiences with others, we came to the conclusion that this information might be insightful for individuals wanting to know how to start a website and informative for those that are paying somebody to setup a website and know where their money is going. Although my experiences have been based on WordPress and phpBB, by-and-large this carries over to any general web hosting experiences.

Ask 404TS: What’s up with “Are you sure you want to navigate away from this page?” dialogs?

An interesting question has been posed on the 404 Tech Support forums asking about those pop-up dialogs you might receive every once in a while that start with "Are you sure you want to navigate away from this page?". The question also asks, "Are there any dangers related to this? Will it install malware? Is there a way to block it automatically?" These are very good questions that we should all be pondering for security reasons. Let me share with you what my experience and research can tell about these somewhat intruisive, but potentially very helpful dialog boxes.

Ask 404TS: How do I expand your phpBB mods to work for the Subsilver2 theme?

I've written two unofficial mods for phpBB3 forums previously that worked very well for those using the Prosilver theme, the MP3 inline attachment mod and the FLV inline attachment mod. Recently, I was asked in the forums how to make them work for the Subsilver2 theme, the other popular theme that many styled themes are based on. After puzzling on it for a long time and decoding the makeup of the Subsilver2 theme, I figured out a way to make it reliably work. Installing this mod will allow you to place inline .flv or .mp3 files to be played streaming with a simple Flash player.

Ask 404TS: How do I find out a Windows 7 Password and other passwords?

An interesting question has come up in the 404 Tech Support forums that I have answered to the best of my abilities. It expands on several topics that I've discussed before such as using Kon-Boot to get logged into the machine (or other means), viewing saved passwords in browsers, and circumventing some security measures by using the target hard drive as a secondary hard drive in a second system. Having a legitimate reason, I hope this information is useful to Ajay, who originally asked this question.
