Installing a Scanner on Windows Server 2003
When installing a scanner on Windows Server 2003, it is necessary to start and make the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service ‘automatic’ as it is ‘disabled’ by default. Otherwise you will just get an error related to not finding any imaging devices.
Right-click ‘My Computer’, go to Manage.
Click the [+] next to ‘Services and Applications’.
Click ‘Services’.
Scroll down to ‘Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)’.
Right-click, go to ‘Properties’.
Change ‘Startup-type’ to ‘automatically’.
Either reboot the machine or click ‘Start’ to start the service.
Install the drivers for the scanner normally.

Assuming your multi-function printer is a Brother brand, I believe I’ve found the drivers you’ll need here:

Supposedly that is the Full driver and software installation so it should include drivers and any utilities you need to install the scanner, printer, etc on your desktop. That package is originally for Windows Vista but it should also work for SharePoint Server 2003. The only exception might be if you are running a 64-bit version of your operating system. I would give that download a try and see if it works for you, keeping in mind that you might have to follow the steps above for enabling the Windows Image Acquisition service on your computer as well.
